All this week’s deals

£50 cashback for opening a TSB account

Though TSB announced a raft of branch closures recently I think this is a good offer for people as you don’t need to switch to get it. That means you can just treat it as an extra bank account. To get it go via cashback site Quidco and apply for either a Classic account, or a Classic Plus account. The latter will also earn you 3% interest each month on balances of up to £1,500.

LAST CHANCE – £15 TopCashback bonus

If you’ve never used TopCashback then this is your last chance to sign up and get an increased new member bonus of £15 before it drops back to £10 next week. You’ll need to spend £10 to get the bonus,

£10 for a litre of Bailey’s

If you missed this offer last week at Morrisons, it’s now at Tesco – but only for Clubcard members until Monday.

New BT Sport month pass now available

For the first time non BT or Sky customers can get access to BT Sport without signing up to a long contract. It costs £25 a month and lasts 30 days – though you’ll need to cancel it if you don’t want it to be an ongoing subscription.

LAST CHANCE – 5 Odeon tickets for £20

If you’re planning on a cinema trip this weekend then it’s worth grabbing this offer before it ends on Friday. You can get two tickets for £10 or five for £20, though there’s a 75p booking fee on top of each one. Look out for a code that’ll bring the price down too. You have to use the tickets by 17th December and they’re not valid on Frozen 2 and a few other films.

Apple iPhones at 0% for 24 months

If you’re after a new iPhone then the cheapest way to get it is usually to buy the phone outright rather than get it via your network as part of your contract. However that’s a lot of money to have available. Fortunately, Apple has just launched an offer where you can spread the payment out over two years with 0% interest.

Extra 10% off the big London theatre sale

The Get into London Theatre sale opens to everyone on Friday (presale is still live for Mastercard users) and it’s worth a look as tickets for big shows start from £10. But you can also stack this with a 10% off code on Theatre Tokens.

Free Brewdog beer on Election Day

If you take a selfie at the polling station and show it in a Brewdog pub you’ll get a free pint. Today only.

Cash Chats #103 – Should you buy now and pay later?

The good and the bad for borrowing money for purchases as 0% interest.

0% interest finance isn’t new. For a set period you can borrow money – usually for a large expense – and as long as you pay it off you don’t get charged interest. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing – I’ve used it myself. But now the likes of Klarna and Clearpay are making it easier than ever to get it, and often on cheaper, more affordable items such as fashion.

So in this episode, I’ve looked at the different 0% options, from credit cards through to finance deals through to these newer services, and shared when they could be the right option, and when they probably aren’t.

This week’s top deals

American Express Shop Small starts Saturday

One of my favourite ways to save money is back. The American Express Shop Small offer starts on Saturday and runs for two weeks. Simply shop at participating small businesses and pay with an Amex credit card and you’ll get £5 back if you spend at least £10. Here’s how I make the most of the offer each year, and how there should still be time to get a card if you don’t have one.

Free Amazon £5 voucher

Eligible users can get a free £5 voucher from Amazon for adding a Mastercard as their default 1-click payment card. Here’s how to find out if you can get it.

Bonus £5 Tesco voucher

A similar value freebie here, but to get it you need to buy a £50 Tesco gift card from the supermarket itself.

£10 for a litre of Bailey’s

Morrisons is offering this deal to get a big bottle of Baileys for a tenner until Sunday.

90-day free Britbox trial for Samsung TV owners

If you’ve a smart Samsung TV you could be able to get three months of the new BBC, ITV and Channel 4 streaming service Britbox for free – up from the standard 30-days. There are lots of classic Christmas specials on there, and from Boxing Day all the old Dr Who’s will be added.

Get 2 free movie rentals, 2 kindle books and 2-4-1 Odeon

I mentioned The Times digital subscription the other week, but the deal has got better as you can now get one month of Times+ for free. In return you get access to Times+ which gives you a weekend two for one voucher at the Odeon every week and a movie rental at Rakuten and selected Kindle book every month. Sign up now and you’ll be able to get the freebies in both December and January. Just remember to cancel.

Big London theatre sale early access

If you’ve got a Mastercard you can get first dibs on the Get into London Theatre sale from Friday. Tickets for big shows start from £10.

Free Santander Cycle hire in London

Throughout December you can get unlimited 30 minute rides over a 24 hour period on one of the many, many Santander Cycles.

LAST CHANCE – Bank Switch offers to end at Natwest

If you fancy the idea of switching bank – or you’re a serial switcher like me – then the last of the big cash offers is closing this week, following the end of Lloyds, HSBC, Barclays and RBS incentives in recent weeks. These could return, but if you don’t want to risk it then there’s the chance to get £150 from Natwest.

What an overdraft really costs you

Overdrafts can be expensive ways to borrow money – and they’re set to get bigger. Here’s how to clear one.

Half of all bank customers use an overdraft when they’re short of cash. Yet many don’t realise that when they use one it’s a form of borrowing. Yep, it’s debt!

But since people don’t see it as such (some even think of it as free money to spend until the next payday), they don’t treat the debt in the same way they would credit cards, loans and other borrowings.

What is an overdraft?

An overdraft is a way to borrow money from the bank without getting a loan or credit card. These can be authorised and unauthorised. Authorised simply means you’ve agreed one in advance with the bank, often with a set limit. Any use above this or if you don’t have one arranged puts you into an unauthorised overdraft.

They can be handy for occasionally dipping in to avoid payments and bills bouncing, but it’s easy to drift into it over the months. And the more you use one, the more money it costs.

It’s also one of the big revenue earners for banks. In 2017 they made more than £2.4bn from overdrafts. This money helps fund things like fee-free accounts, switching incentives and interest rates, as well as build up the profits for the bank – all at the expense of those struggling with their finances.

How much can they cost?

The simple answer is potentially a lot of money. The fuller answer is more complicated. That’s because all the banks have different systems. It could be a flat charge for each day you are overdrawn, it could be an interest rate, perhaps a few pence per pound overdrawn, or it could be a mix or some other system.

This has made it tough to understand what you are actually paying if you use one. And you might not realise that it could easily be costing you as much as 50% APR. That’s a hefty rate of borrowing – much higher than most credit cards. I think that’s something people are likely to be surprised about.

How overdrafts are changing

But this is going to change. The regulator, the FCA, has ruled that the banks must have one simple system for charging for an overdraft. This will mean a single interest rate which you can compare, and no more daily or monthly fixed charges.

Nationwide changed its rate in November 2019 on most of its accounts, moving on a FlexAccount from 18.9% to 39.9% for all customers using an overdraft. That will mean some customers will pay more to borrow via an overdraft – Which? says this will apply to around two-thirds.

HSBC has also announced a similar rise, with a single rate of 39.9% across all accounts from March 2020, though it is adding a £25 interest-free buffer to the “Advance” and standard “Bank” current accounts. Premium customers will get a £500 buffer.

All the other banks have to bring in this simplified rate by 6th April 2020.

Banks also can’t charge more for an unarranged overdraft than an authorised one, essentially meaning there won’t be a difference between the two – though in all likelihood it could mean you can’t use any unarranged overdrafts.

As well as these changes banks will also have to look for persistent expensive debt, try help. It’s not clear yet what this could be, perhaps it’ll see freezing of interest rates on overdrafts for those really struggling, or perhaps offering a cheaper loan to cover the debt.

However, since there’s ages before these rules begin for all banks it’s best to take action now to reduce the cost of your overdraft.

Cash Chats #102 – Is it the thought that counts?

Andy shares why he hates Secret Santa and how you can avoid giving an unwanted gift.

A bad present, either because it’s not been thought through or it’s just a lazy purchase, is one of the worst wastes of money as there’s every chance it’ll end up in the bin or just at the back of a cupboard unused.

So in this episode, Andy shares how you can make sure whatever gifts you buy actually to live up to the old adage that it’s the thought that counts. He’ll also look at whether regifting is ok.

Cash Chats #101 – Black Friday Reality Check

Can you really get a bargain in the Black Friday sales?

A report this week claimed only one in five Black Friday deals were at their cheapest on that day in November last year. In the podcast this week I’ve taken a look at why that might be and assessed a handful of the offers already. Plus, a warning about buy-now, pay-later services such as Klarna.

Cash Chats #100 – How to get hundreds of pounds of cash for free

This week, to celebrate 100 episodes, I’m going to share with you some easy ways to get free money. And lots of it.

There’s no need to faff around with filling in surveys. No buying things you wouldn’t normally buy, or getting part of the money back. No fees or subscriptions. No upfront payments. This is all from just normal spending. 100% Profit.

You’ll get hard cash or in a few cases gift vouchers – not money off or discounts. Not predicted savings by switching. Actual cash. And the money will be yours.

The money won’t be overnight in your bank account. Some of this could take a few months, possibly longer. But if you’ve got a bit of time, I think it’s well worth it.

Some of the payments are small, starting at just a few quid. Some are huge, up to £175. You might not be able to do all of them, but I hope you’ll be able to get at least £100, if not five times that much.

Cash hack: Boost your cashback payouts

Use Topcashback and Quidco to your advantage and get even more money back. Here’s what you need to know.

Cashback seems too good to be true. You’re essentially getting paid to shop. And though there are a few things to watch out for, it’s an easy way to generate some extra money. Here’s more on how it works.

Pretty much everything I buy is via a cashback site. The main exceptions are really Amazon and John Lewis who rarely offer deals through the sites. But most other retailers do – and I make hundreds of pounds each year doing it.

Hopefully you’re doing the same (if not, why not? Here’s how to get a fab new member bonus of at least £10). But are you getting as much cashback as you can?

I’m not talking about comparing rates on the two sites (you should) or paying with cashback credit cards (again you should). No, there are actually a couple of simple ways you can boost the money you earn and the money you get paid that are well worth looking into.

Become a premium member

You don’t need to pay to use either Topcashback or Quidco, but with both if you pay a little extra you can get upgraded to a premium account. In return you get bonus cashback, as well as things like priority customer service and no ads. Both also offer exclusive promotions and competitions – though I can’t say I’ve noticed either.

Here’s what they offer:

Topcashback Plus

  • Cost: £5
  • Typical cashback bonus: 5%
  • Payout bonus: yes
  • £2.50 higher member referral bonus

Quidco Premium

The Quidco offering has just changed. Rather than £5 a year, as you do with TopCashback, you now pay £1 a month – but only in the months you use it. So it could be £12 a year but could also be a lot lower.

  • Cost: £1 for every month you use the site
  • Up to 10% top-up on cashback rates
  • Payout bonus: yes
  • Double the difference guarantee
  • Faster paying with 650+ selected retailers
  • Occasional opt-in bonuses exclusive to Premium

Which is best?

The big factor that goes in Topcashback’s favour is that it’s only £5 a year. So you’re more likely to get your money back if you use it all the times, especially with the 5% cashback bonus which means you’re getting a little extra most times you shop. This can quickly add up. Often it’s just pennies, but if you use the site enough there’s enough to justify the £5.

The increased price for Quidco does seem a bit steep, but if you’re an occasional user you could pay less overall. Also, it does give the flexibility to pick and choose when you shop. For instance, you might just want to use it when you’ve got a big purchase such as broadband. It also promises double the difference if you find a higher rate elsewhere. Again this could be a big earner on big purchases.

Why it might not be right for you: Pretty simple really. I wouldn’t sign up for these premium memberships if it’s unlikely you’ll get the investment back.

Get paid in gift cards

If you need cash it’s always a better option to get your cashback paid to your bank account or Paypal. However, you can boost your earnings a little if you get it paid instead as a gift card or gift voucher. Both Quidco and Topcashback have this feature.

You might need a minimum amount to withdraw with some cards, ranging from £1 to £10.

There are a fair few options in both. TopCashback tends to have higher rates, and both boost what you get if you’re a premium member. Sadly the Zeek payout option has disappeared but you can still increase your payout. Here’s my pick of the best top-ups:

Quidco

These rates are first for standard membership and then Premium membership.

You simply select your payout option from your dashboard and the gift card will be emailed through in a few days.

  • iTunes ( 3% / 7%)
  • Amazon (1% / 2%)
  • Argos (3% / 6%)
  • M&S ( 3% / 5%)
  • Costa (5% / 10%)
  • All Bar One, Harvester and various pubs ( 15%)

Topcashback

These rates are higher than standard Plus membership rates.

To get these extras you first need to transfer your cashback into a reward wallet. Once it’s there you can’t take it back out for a cash payout. Instead you select one of the retailers and a digital gift card is sent. It can take a few days for this to be emailed to you.

  • Love2shop card useable at Boots, Argos and loads more (6%)
  • Tesco (5%)
  • Ticketmaster (10%)
  • Amazon (2% / 2.5%)
  • Marks and Spencers (5%)
  • Currys PC World (10%)
  • Uber (5%)

Which option is best?

It really depends on which retailer you’re likely to shop at. For example, there’s a higher Tesco and Ticketmaster boost at TopCashback, but iTunes and Argos are exclusive to Quidco.

Remember you can usually use gift cards alongside other promotions too, as they’re treated by most retailers as cash.

Why it might not be for you: Gift cards are great in lots of ways, but there are downsides such as forgetting to use them before they expire. If cash is better for you, get paid in cash. Here are my rules for using gift cards.

Use a browser plugin

One of the reasons so many people miss out on cashback is they forget to check! Both Quidco and TopCashback have extensions you can add to Google Chrome (TopCashback also works on Firefox). Once you’ve installed them, which takes just a couple of clicks, you’ll get notifications when cashback is available.

So for example you could be on the Asos website, and you’ll see a reminder that cashback is available and how much. You then simply click to activate the offer and you shouldn’t need to even go via the cashback site itself.

You can add both, which gives you a quick chance to compare the rates too.

> Download the TopCashback Notifier

> Download the Quidco Cashback Reminder

Check for semi-regular opt-in bonuses

A few times every month both Topcashback and Quidco have additional bonuses for existing members.  Sometimes they’re exclusive to Premium/Plus members. These usually range from 50p to £5, with a minimum spend between £1 and £10. I tend to spot them more with Quidco than Topcashback.

This is basically extra free money on top of any cashback you earn from the retailers. I’ve probably made an extra £27 or so this way over the last 12 months.

To find these you usually need to check the homepage for each cashback site. Then you need to click an opt-in button. Once you’ve done that use the site as normal. The deals are often limited and tend to last just one day.

Get cashback in physical shops

This fourth option isn’t as good as the others but it’s handy to know about. Both sites also allow you to add certain cashback deals to your debit or credit card, meaning you can still claim the money back if you shop in-store rather than online.

You’ll need to register your card and then both sites require you to activate each offer. Some are specific to a Visa card or a Mastercard, and there are only selected retailers. You’ll probably get better rates online too – but it’s a good extra if know about.

Not signed up to a cashback site?

Right, before you just go over and enter your details… STOP.

New members can get some fantastic sign-up offers, ranging from £10 to as high as £17 (hint: sign up for my weekly newsletter for the latter). To help you get the best bonus I keep an updated list of the new member best deals.

Once you’re signed up you can also refer your friends, earning yourself between £5 and £15 a go – once they’ve earned £10 cashback themselves.
