August’s savings news

No change to the base rate

There won’t be any automatic changes to tracker or variable rate savings following the latest Bank of England base rate decision, as it remained at 3.75%.

There’s still uncertainty from economists and markets about whether there will be a hike this year, so don’t expect much change to fixed rates either.

More new 8% savings accounts

Following Santander’s 8% regular saver launch last month, Lloyds group have hiked their offering to match it. With three banks under this umbrella – Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland – that’s potentially 8% on a total of £950 of new savings each month.

The new rates apply to new applications. If you have an existing account the terms won’t change. However, since you can’t have more than one monthly saver at a time with each bank that does mean you will also need to wait for your current year to end before getting the higher rate.

All are fixed at 8%, which means the rate can’t change in the year they are open for, and all have a cap of £250. This includes the Club Lloyds monthly saver which used to allow up to £400 a month.

The rules for who can get them are slightly different for each of them. The Lloyds and Bank of Scotland ones require a current account with the respective bank, while the Halifax one is open to anyone. Lloyds customers no longer need to have a Club Lloyds account to access the rate, though confusingly there are two options, a normal and a Club Lloyds option – you can’t get both.

The Lloyds and Bank of Scotland “monthly savers” allow withdrawals, but the Halifax “regular saver” does not.

One final note. The axing of the Halifax brand means over the coming months those accounts will transition over to Lloyds branding. Presumably when this happens the Halifax regular saver will cease to exist. However, exisitng accounts won’t be shut down, so you’ve a small window to open regular savers at both banks. You’ll then have two 8% paying accounts with Lloyds, a work around on the one account limit.
