Find out where to save

The summer holidays are here and costs can add up if you’re eating out with children during the six-week break.

Here we’ve rounded up every place you can get a free or cheap kids’ meal – including those with and without an additional adult spend.

Can you actually get a totally free kids’ meal?

Yes it is possible to get a free kids’ meal this summer, but most restaurants, pubs and cafes require an adult to buy one as well to qualify for the freebie.

This can still be quite a substantial saving, if you were planning on eating out as a family anyway, but it’s always worth checking other deals to see what gives the biggest discount. Most free (or cheap) kids’ meal offers aren’t available with other discounts or deals.

Not all offers are the same either, so always check the small print to make sure you qualify for the offer or even check with a member of staff before you order. Some offers, for example, are automatic but you might need to download an app, sign up to a loyalty programme or follow certain conditions to qualify.

There will be a maximum age kids need to be to use the offers, usually it’s 10 but it can be up to 16 in some cases.

Free and cheap kids’ meals (no minimum spend)

Asda

Kids aged 16 and under can eat a £1 meal at any Asda Cafe and there’s no minimum spend or requirement for another purchase to be made. The offer is valid throughout the year and children can choose a hot or cold meal, which usually costs £3.20.

Morrisons

Anyone can get a free bowl of Kellogg’s cereal and a piece of fruit at a Morrisons Cafe, by asking for a “Kellogg’s breakfast” at the till. The offer is open to children and adults and there is no requirement to buy anything else. It’s currently running until Sunday 6th September but will start again between Monday 12th October and Sunday 1st November, and Monday 21st December and Sunday 3rd January.

How to cut the price of food over the summer holidays

The cost of food can be expensive over the summer holidays, three meals a day every day and no school breakfast or lunch clubs.

But making packed lunches and taking them with you – and more snacks than you think you need – can save money. Ice lollies kept in a thermos cup, for example, will stay frozen for a few hours, saving you spending a small fortune every time you leave the house and the ice cream van appears.

Websites including Too Good To Go and Olio, which sell off excess food from shops and restaurants at a lower price, are also worth looking at if you’re looking for cheap food over the holidays (or at any time).
