Deals and offers to make sure costs don’t add up
HBO Max is a brand new streaming service in the UK, though a lot of the content will be familiar. That’s because until now Sky TV has been the home of HBO box sets like Game of Thrones and Warner Bros films like One Battle After Another, while TNT Sports (which used to be BT Sport) has lived on Discovery+ for the last few years.
They’ll all now be watchable from the new HBO Max app, which you can access on smart TVs and devices. But you’ll also be able to still watch some of the content via Sky TV, Virgin Media and NOW. So it can get a little confusing where is best to get it.
Here we’ve broken down how much it costs from the main outlets, and special offers that can bring the price down.

How much is HBO Max?
You can get HBO Max programmes direct from them on month by month deals. If you’re happy with adverts, or aren’t worried about 4K, then you can save money with some of the lower tiers.
You’ll pay the same if you add HBO Max as a channel to Amazon Prime Video.
| Tier | Features | Monthly cost |
| Basic with Ads | Stream on 2 devices at once Full 1080p HD video resolution Not all movies included | £4.99/month |
| Standard with Ads | Stream on 2 devices at once Full 1080p HD video resolution 30 downloads (limits apply) | £5.99/month |
| Standard | Stream on 2 devices at once Full 1080p HD video resolution 30 downloads (limits apply) | £9.99/month |
| Premium | Stream on 4 devices at once 4K UHD & Dolby Atmos as available 100 downloads (limits apply) | £14.99/month |
If you’re keen on TNT Sports alongside the movies and box sets, you can save a decent amount with bundled packages, particulaly if you lock in for 12 months.
Though that of course impacts your flexibility, so you might be better off paying more in the months you use it, but less overall – just remember to cancel when not watching.
| Tier | Monthly cost | 12 month saver plan cost |
| Standard with Ads & TNT Sports | £36.98/month | £27.99/month |
| Standard & TNT Sports | £40.98/month | £30.99/month |
| Premium & TNT Sports | £45.98/month | £34.99/month |
How much is HBO Max via NOW?
You can also watch the TV and film parts of HBO Max via a NOW TV membership. The big difference is the whole HBO Max package is actually split across different NOW passes.
With the Entertainment pass, you’ll get all the new HBO Max content and old box sets. You’ll also be able to view back catalogue movies, just recent releases. This is the same package as you’d get with the HBO Max Basic tier, but you’ll also get access to Sky’s entertainment and kids channels. At full price this is £9.99 a month.
To get the new movies, you’ll need to sign up for the Sky Cinema pass, which at £9.99 a month is pretty pricey. Alongside the new Warner Bros films, you’ll also get all the other ones show on Sky.
As standard, both tiers come with adverts and lower 720p HD quality. You’ll need to pay £6 a month to ditch adds and upgrade to 1080p, or £9 for 4K picture and Dolby Atmos sounds.
Sky Sports are separate passes, and you can’t watch TNT Sports via the NOW apps.
However, there are frequent new member deals, which we’ve covered in our separate NOW TV deals article.
You can also save big through the NOW cancellation trick, where you go through the motions of cancelling in the hope of getting a discount to stick around. This includes the Boost upgrades.
| NOW pass | Includes | Cost per month |
| Entertainment & HBO Max | Sky TV channels plus HBO Max TV, older Warner Bros movies | £9.99/month |
| Sky Cinema | Sky Cinema channels plus all Warner Bros movies | £9.99/month |
| Boost upgrade | 1080p, no ads, downloads, 2 streams at once | £6/month |
| Ultra Boost upgrade | 4K, no ads, downloads, 4 streams at once | £9/month |

How much is HBO Max via Sky and Virgin?
The good news for existing Sky and Virgin Media customers is that you’ll get HBO Max bundled in for free. It will however only be the basic option with adverts.
You’ll need to pay more in order to upgrade to higher tiers, which will be the difference of what they cost minus £4.99.
You’ll also be locked in to longer contracts, and we think most people will be better off cancelling Sky and using the DIY approach when adding on entertainment streaming services – including using NOW to get the main Sky channels.
Cheapest ways to watch TNT Sports
You now need to watch TNT Sports via the HBO Max app (unless you get the channels via your Sky or Virgin TV packages).
We’ve detailed some bundled package deals at the top of this article, but you will find more deals in our dedicated TNT Sports deals page.
