Advent calendar offers
A lot of retailers tend to have a countdown to Christmas within their apps, via email or on their websites. These often have voucher codes or freebies, so they can be worth paying attention to. Here are the ones we’ve spotted so far.
Lidl: daily secret boxes
Lidl is running an advent calendar in the Lidl Plus app. You just need to open the app daily to get a voucher or freebie each day until December 24.
John Lewis: digital advent calendar
If you’re a My John Lewis member and download the app then you can get a daily treat until 24 December by opening the app every day. Treats include freebies and discount vouchers, as well as ten £5,000 John Lewis vouchers.
Morrisons: 12 Days of Christmas (ended)
Some people with a Morrisons More Card can get access to its “12 Days of Christmas” between now and 12 December. Every day, you can open the advent calendar and get freebies, More Points, discounts and the chance to win £1,000 worth of points.
You can’t go back and get the previous day’s rewards, and you should keep an eye on when each voucher expires.
Sainsbury’s: Advent calendar (ended)
There’s an advent calendar running in the Nectar app from 5 December to 20 December where you can win prizes, including bonus Nectar points, Argos gift vouchers and food freebies.
To enter, you need to visit the Nectar website or app and log in to your Nectar account. Then, just click through to the Advent Calendar page and click on the bauble.
Boots: 12 Days of Magic (ended)
Boots is getting in on the Christmas season with discounts or prizes every day until 12 December. You need to be an Advantage card member and have the Boots app installed to take part. Once you’ve revealed the prize, it’ll be added to your offers.
O2: Shake the snow globe (ended)
Those with O2 Priority can get access to its “Shake the snow globe” advent, which runs until 15 December. Each day, between 10am and 10pm you can shake the globe within the app to enter for a chance to win a prize.
Prizes include gift cards, Merlin gold passes, free Greggs treats, holiday vouchers, Virgin Experience vouchers and Dining Out vouchers.
You’ll need to enter your details the first time, then you just shake your phone and find out if you won a prize.
If you don’t have O2 or Virgin Media, you can still get O2 Priority with this hack.
Christmas reductions
Buy wrapping paper, tags, bags and cards in January
If you want to save yourself money next year then get yourself out to the stores in the days between Christmas and New Year to stock up on wrapping paper, gift tags, gift bags and Christmas cards. You can get these for more than 90% off their original prices in some cases.
Just remember where you put it all so you don’t buy it all again next year.
Christmas food offers
Reduced Christmas veggies
Every year in the final week before Christmas, supermarkets drop the prices of Christmas veg to mere pennies. Here’s what’s been announced so far:
- Asda has reduced its Christmas veg to 8p until 24 December, including carrots, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and parsnips
- Morrisons has reduced its veggies to just 10p, including carrots, parsnips, sprouts and swede from 19 December. You’ll need to have the Morrisons More card.
- Tesco will reduce its Christmas veg to just 15p from 19-24 December including carrots, Brussels sprouts, parsnips and potatoes. You’ll need to have a Clubcard handy to get the reduction
- Aldi will reduce its Christmas veg on 19 December, with potatoes, carrots, parsnips, red and white cabbages, broccoli and Brussels sprouts at 15p
- Sainsbury’s will reduce Brussels sprouts, parsnips, carrots, swede, red cabbage, and potatoes to 15p from 18-24 December. You’ll need to make sure you’ve got a Nectar Card handy to get the discount
- Lidl’s Christmas veg goes down to 15p from 19 to 24 December. It includes parsnips, carrots, Brussels sprouts, shallots, swede and potatoes. Once again, this is the only supermarket with onions in the mix!
Free carrots (for Rudolph!)
Tesco is giving away free bags of carrots for Rudolph until Christmas Eve. There are dedicated stands in its larger stores giving away free bags of carrots for you to leave out for Santa’s reindeer on Christmas Eve (or cook up for your Christmas dinner).
In addition, Morrisons is giving away free bags of its wonky carrots in its larger stores on the 21 and 22 December.

Christmas freebies
Free letter from Santa (ended)
If you want to keep some of the magic alive, you can get a letter from Santa for your little one for just the cost of a stamp. All you’ve got to do is have them write a letter to Santa and post it (don’t forget a stamp!) before 30 November 2023 and you’ll get a response.
Here are Santa’s instructions:
- Write Santa’s address carefully on the envelope (below)
- Put a stamp on the envelope so it gets to Santa
- Include your full name and address in your letter
And here’s Santa’s address:
Santa/Father Christmas
Santa’s Grotto
Reindeerland
XM4 5HQ
There’s also a downloadable reply if you can’t wait (or leave it too late).
Free Dairy Milk bar (ended)
The Cadbury Secret Santa Postal Service is back! Cadbury is giving out free bars of Dairy Milk. All you have to do is scan the QR code on a poster that you’ll find at bus stops, train stations and on high streets.
Don’t expect to find a poster at every bus stop you pass — there are a few locations on the website, but these won’t be particularly easy to come by!
